Forget what the manual says unless you like to wipe up oil from around the head. My '96 manual says 2.5 quarts with filter change and I'm an engineer (it's not my fault), so I obeyed the manual. If you put in that much, you'll blow oil until the oil seeks its own level. That level is actually 2 quarts. If you replace the old oil with 2 quarts, she runs just fine and doesn't blow oil.
